About us

Merkkilaskuri.com is a tool site built to make counting the characters and words in a text as easy as possible. It started from a simple observation: many people need a quick way to check the length of a text, but plenty of counters are cluttered, hide the figure that actually matters, or handle accented and special characters inconsistently.

What we offer

On the site you'll find a free character counter that shows characters with and without spaces, words, sentences, paragraphs and lines in real time. We also offer specialised tools and guides: a 160-character counter for text messages, instructions for the character count in Word, OpenOffice and LibreOffice, and code examples for developers.

Our principles

• Privacy first: the text you type is never sent to a server. All counting happens in your own browser.
• Free and open: using the tools requires no sign-up and no payment.
• Clear English: the content and counting are built around clear, everyday English.
• Clarity: we aim for every figure to be understandable and justified.
