    What it's for

    Why count characters without spaces?

Plenty of situations call specifically for a character count without spaces. When you fill in an official form where a field only holds a set number of characters, or when translation work is billed per character, spaces are often meant to be left out. This character counter without spaces is tuned for exactly that: the main figure tells you directly how many actual characters the text has once the whitespace is removed.

In practice it works like this: you paste your text into the field and the tool immediately shows both characters without spaces and characters with spaces. At a glance you can see how much the spaces add to the total length. If you need an even tighter count, switch on Remove all whitespace, and line breaks and tabs are left out of the count too.

    Two ways to remove whitespace

In everyday language the phrases without spaces, no spaces and space-free all mean the same thing, but when counting it helps to separate two levels:

    • Only spaces removed: ordinary word spaces are removed, but line breaks and tabs remain. This is the most common interpretation.
    • All whitespace removed: line breaks and tabs are removed as well. Use this when you want to count only the visible letters and characters.

Tip: if you compare the figure with another program, check which rule it counts by. The difference comes precisely at line breaks and tabs.

    Example

Take the sentence "A picture paints a thousand words." With spaces it is 31 characters and without spaces 26 characters — a difference of five word spaces. In longer texts the gap grows, so the no-spaces figure is always somewhat smaller. Using both figures at once is exactly how you get a feel for that difference.

    FAQ

    Frequently asked questions

What does “characters without spaces” mean?

It means the character count of a text once spaces are left out of the count. Letters, numbers and punctuation are counted, but not the gaps between words. This is a common unit of measure in, for example, translation work and tight form fields.

Are line breaks and tabs removed too?

By default only ordinary spaces are removed. If you want to remove line breaks and tabs as well, switch on Remove all whitespace. You see both figures at once, so you can pick whichever suits the situation.

Why do characters without spaces differ from characters with spaces?

The difference is exactly the number of spaces. If a text has, say, 40 words, there are typically 39 spaces between them, and those are counted in only one of the figures. That is why both numbers are always shown side by side.

Are accented and special characters counted correctly?

Yes. Accented letters and special characters each count as one character even when spaces are removed, so the count matches the true number of visible characters.
